Equipping Home Visiting Staff to Support Immigrant Families: A Recap of the Immigrants' Rights Webinar Series

The LA County Home Visiting Consortium recently hosted a three-part webinar series, Equipping Home Visiting Staff to Support Immigrant Families: Navigating Benefits, Legal Rights, and Employment Resources. The series was designed to provide home visitors with actionable knowledge and explore critical topics like public benefits, immigration law, and workers’ rights to help home visitors better support immigrant families across Los Angeles County.

Webinar Highlights

Webinar 1: Access to Benefits & Resources Through a Public Charge Lens
This webinar offered an overview of public benefits programs, eligibility criteria, and the implications of public charge policies on future immigration status. Attendees learned how to dispel myths and reduce barriers that prevent immigrant families from accessing essential resources. Practical tools and strategies were shared to help families feel supported amidst the changing immigration policies.

Webinar 2: Immigration Legal Framework and Referral Process
Focusing on the U.S. immigration system, this webinar covered family-based immigration, eligibility for humanitarian relief, and the risks of unauthorized service providers like notaries. Attendees gained a deeper understanding of the referral process for trusted legal organizations, such as Neighborhood Legal Services of LA, and were equipped with strategies to navigate these systems effectively.

Webinar 3: Workers’ Rights and Finding Work
The series concluded with an exploration of immigrant workers’ rights in California, including employment protections for undocumented workers and legal resources for addressing exploitation. Participants learned to identify red flags in employment agencies, enforce workers' rights, and access reliable job placement resources.

Next Steps

Attendees expressed appreciation for the series’ accessible, actionable content and emphasized the importance of continued training. Moving forward, the Consortium is committed to providing updates on evolving immigration policies and additional training opportunities.
